Strong response in Esch: Sparta win 96-65
After Basket Esch took the first quarter 19-16, Sparta completely took over. The final 30 minutes were won 80-46, while an Esch team that had scored 111 points one week earlier was held to just 65.
Basket Esch entered the game at 4-2, exactly the same record as Sparta. More importantly, Esch had scored 111 points in a 111-78 win at Racing just one week earlier. Sparta, meanwhile, came off a 102-90 loss at Arantia in which defensive stability had been the main issue. This therefore became a useful test of how the team would respond.
The opening quarter belonged to the home side, with Basket Esch leading 19-16 after ten minutes. From there, Sparta completely changed the game. The second quarter went 28-18, giving Sparta a 44-37 halftime lead. The third was even stronger at 24-12, before Sparta closed with another 28-16 fourth quarter. Across the final 30 minutes, Sparta outscored Esch 80-46.
The strongest part of the performance was defensive. Basket Esch had scored 111 points one week earlier and were held to 65 here. Quinten Nelson led Esch with 17 points, Emmanuel Jesus Frederico added 11, Damien Thill nine and Denilson Ramos Fonseca eight. Sparta prevented any of Esch's main offensive options from taking complete control of the game.
The scoring profile also explains Sparta's offensive control. The player totals show 31 made two-point baskets, six threes and 16 free throws. That means 62 points came from two-point field goals. Sparta repeatedly attacked the paint and did not need an exceptional three-point night to reach 96 points.
Shelton Williams-Dryden led Sparta with 22 points. Avelon John scored 15, Yannick Verbeelen 13, Max Logelin 10 and Jarvis Williams nine. Tom Germeaux and Nicolas Hittelet added eight each, while Mathieu Arendt scored seven. The scoring was spread across the rotation and consistently gave Esch different problems to solve.
The interior production was particularly important. John made seven two-point baskets, Williams-Dryden six, Verbeelen four, Logelin three and Arendt three. Sparta repeatedly reached high-quality finishing positions and kept pressure on the Esch defense.
Esch made nine three-pointers, but that perimeter production was not enough to offset Sparta's control closer to the basket. After halftime, Esch scored only 28 points. That is the clearest indication of how effectively Sparta tightened the game defensively.
Compared with the defeat at Arantia one week earlier, the response was significant. Sparta had conceded 102 points there and struggled to maintain defensive stability. In Esch, the exact opposite happened after the opening quarter: the defense became progressively stronger and the home side found fewer clean possessions as the game went on.
The 96-65 win therefore carries real weight. Against a 4-2 opponent that had just scored 111 points, Sparta won on the road by 31. The offense was balanced, the attacks toward the basket were efficient and the defense tightened across three consecutive quarters. It was exactly the kind of response Sparta needed after the loss in Larochette.
